Abstract

I applied to Princeton’s graduate program in economics in 1982. The main reason I applied was that Vijay Krishna and Dilip Abreu were both at Princeton. They had been a couple of years ahead of me at the Delhi School of Economics and already had legendary status there. Both were students of Hugo and word of his qualities as an advisor had spread on the grapevine. I was both astounded and petrified when I received word that Hugo wanted me to call him (collect). I had no idea that famous professors spoke to prospective graduate students. In fact, I was sure that I would be asked some tricky technical questions and had half a mind to keep my notes and textbooks within easy reach when I called. Instead, Hugo informed me that the department wanted to offer me a fellowship and urged me to accept. It is one of the most serendipitous moments of my life. Hugo could have let the office send me a letter but it was typical of him to take the time out to make a personal connection.
