Abstract

This chapter explores the European Union's pivotal role in integrating sustainability into economic and financial strategies. Anchored by international agreements such as the Paris Climate Agreement and the UN’s 2030 Agenda, the EU has emerged as a global leader in sustainable finance. Key initiatives include the European Green Deal, which targets climate neutrality by 2050, and the 2018 Action Plan on Financing Sustainable Growth, which aims to reorient capital flows toward sustainable investments. The chapter also discusses the evolving role of financial markets in mitigating climate risks, promoting transparency, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The EU’s multi-faceted approach emphasizes collaboration, regulatory frameworks, and the development of global standards to advance sustainability and address pressing climate challenges.
