Abstract

Efforts of political elites from the Northeast and South to stimulate products relevant to their regions between 1919 and 1922 ignored the political realities of the First Republic. With their departure from political power, between 1922 and 1930, the Minas Gerais-São Paulo café com leite (coffee with milk) political alliance redefined the nation’s priorities. Mineiran Artur Bernardes, National President from 1922 to 1926, oriented Brazil’s economic policy toward supporters in the Center-South, especially coffee growers. Paulista Washington Luiz Pereira de Souza ratified and solidified a coffee-centric orientation during his presidency from 1926 to 1930 while promoting the state’s cotton production.
