Abstract

This chapter explores the emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) in combating corruption within the public and private sectors of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It delves into the various AI technologies being employed to detect patterns and anomalies indicative of corrupt practices, such as procurement fraud and embezzlement. The chapter outlines how AI enhances transparency and accountability through automated auditing systems and blockchain-based technologies that secure digital transactions. It also highlights the challenges of adapting AI anti-corruption tools to the complex legal frameworks and bureaucratic landscapes of the MENA region. Furthermore, it examines the implications of using AI in surveillance and monitoring activities, addressing concerns about privacy rights and the potential for misuse. The chapter provides case studies illustrating the successful implementation of AI in regulatory bodies and institutions, showcasing significant reductions in corrupt activities. Finally, it reflects on the prospects of AI in fighting corruption, emphasizing the need for international cooperation, strategic investment, and responsible implementation to foster ethical usage and increased public trust.
