Abstract

The chapter presents an introduction to the Brazilian energy sector. The phases of development of the energy industry in Brazil are highlighted, encompassing oil and natural gas, electricity and renewables. The emergence and consolidation of the industry will be presented, highlighting the role of state-owned companies, Petrobras and Eletrobras. The evolution of the institutional and business framework of the segments will be presented until the current situation and the most significant data. The chapter will highlight the regional diversities of energy infrastructure and their impacts on the Brazilian economy and social indicators.
