Abstract

This chapter focuses on the energy landscape and history of Venezuela, a country with a rich and dynamic energy history. Despite being one of the largest oil-producing countries in the world, the historiography of Venezuela’s energy industry has received limited attention. This chapter addresses the oversight by tracing the evolution of the country’s energy sector from the industrial age through to the present day. The chapter will provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental, cultural, and societal impacts of the energy industry, and will examine key regions, as well as the political and organizational dynamics of both state-owned and multinational energy companies. By sharing and gaining insight into the reasons behind the strong feelings of economic nationalism associated with the energy industry in Venezuela, this chapter offers a unique perspective on the energy landscape and history of the country.
