Abstract

Colombia, with its diverse flora and fauna and strategic location, faces the challenge of becoming an environmentally sustainable country that uses renewable resources to promote industrial development and generate jobs. Throughout its history, Colombia with its national workforce and foreign technology has efficiently utilized its natural resources. Now, with the energy transition, the government is highly committed to the challenge of sustainability. It has become crucial for all stakeholders to become aware of the importance of maintaining a balance between energy demand and supply, to ensure a livable for future generations. This chapter focuses on the Colombian Government’s plan to comply with the energy transition, with special emphasis on the use of biomass as a renewable resource to replace non-renewable fossil fuels in the Valle del Cauca (Cauca River Valley) region. Biomass composed of bagasse, pith, and trash is a promising alternative that can be utilized in industrial processes, such as energy generation, to achieve sustainability goals. By utilizing renewable resources, Colombia can generate its energy needs, create employment opportunities, and improve the quality of life for its citizens while preserving its natural resources.
