Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET) at Ngan Thuy Commune, North Central Coast of Vietnam: Development Based on Tourism and Local People’s Perceptions

Abstract

Developing community-based ecotourism (CBET) is a direction to create sustainable livelihoods for ethnic minorities. CBET has been growing worldwide and has become a concern of many countries in tourism development strategies. It is not just an ordinary tourist activity but at the same time an educational activity, supporting the goals of preserving the natural environment and indigenous cultural values. Ngan Thuy, a mountainous region in Quang Binh province, central Vietnam, is an area rich in natural resources that provide the basis for the livelihoods of peripheral communities. These communities are already in poverty, which is likely to put more pressure on the use of vulnerable ecosystems making it unsustainable. Developing Ngan Thuy commune as a CBET site can be seen as a potential approach to ensure the conservation of natural resources while improving the living standards of the community. The objective of this study is to examine the current situation, strengths, and barriers to the potential implementation of CBET in Ngan Thuy, through the perception of unity and tourists, to offer some solutions to develop CBET in Ngan Thuy. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey using a structured survey schedule from a randomly selected sample of community members (110 local people), while 10 respondents each from the village head and purposefully selected restaurant owner/tour guide (180 tourists) visiting the area of Ngan Thuy commune were purposefully selected and interviewed using a structured survey schedule. Research has shown that tourist landscapes have a positive impact on the satisfaction and perception of tourists; in addition, infrastructure, as well as accommodation services, is still limited in the perception of tourists guests. In addition, people’s difficulties are also a major barrier affecting CBTE in Ngan Thuy. Limitations/Significance of the Study: This study is specific to one destination and is only approached by tourists and residents, so there is still no multidimensional view of the research issue from an overall perspective.
