Abstract

This chapter critically examines the transformation of Lebanon’s labour market in the wake of the Syrian refugee crisis, focusing on the challenges and dynamics of employment. This chapter dissects the increased competition for jobs between Lebanese citizens and Syrian refugees, the subsequent pressure on wages, and the expansion of the informal economy. Through an in-depth analysis, it explores the immediate and long-term effects of the refugee influx on employment rates, wage levels, and labour market conditions. The chapter also addresses the policy responses aimed at mitigating these impacts and fostering labour market resilience. By combining statistical data, policy analysis, and case studies, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the labour market’s adaptation to the crisis, offering insights into the complexities of employment in a context of massive forced migration.
