Abstract

This chapter examines the ethical and responsible use of generative AI (GenAI), such as ChatGPT, in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It highlights the growing interest among students and educators in integrating AI tools into their learning and teaching practices. To navigate the ethical, social, and technical complexities of embedding GenAI into educational settings, the chapter draw on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) framework. Built on four pillars: anticipation, reflexivity, inclusiveness, and responsiveness. The RRI framework provides a pragmatic and strategy lens for building an ethical, equitable, and effective learning environment despite the ethical concerns of GenAI. The chapter concludes by presenting a “Responsible GenAI for HE (GenAI4HE)” flowchart which suggests how stakeholders in HE can approach the responsible use of GenAI in practice. The chart can be used as a benchmark to evaluate the journey in using GenAI responsibly, while also serving as a template to guide anyone who is about to start implementing policies and guidelines for using GenAI in HE. It primarily advocates for a balanced and ethical approach to the integration of GenAI technologies in HEIs, ensuring that the GenAI advancements enhance rather than compromising the academic integrity and learning experience.
