Development Bank of Ethiopia: A Catalyst for Economic Growth and Development

Abstract

With the first development finance institution established in 1906, development banking has more than a century history in Ethiopia. The Development Bank of Ethiopia was established to propel economic growth by promoting agriculture and industrial development through the provision of medium and long-term loans. By supporting projects and programmes in priority areas such as commercial agriculture, agro-processing, manufacturing, mining, energy, SMEs, women empowerment, and renewable energy, the DBE has contributed to Ethiopia's food security, industrialization, job creation, and entrepreneurship. However, the DBE is confronted with some obstacles, including borrowers with limited skills in project design and implementation, political interference in its governance and operations, and a high proportion of non-performing loans due to defaults engendered by political instability. To enhance its role as a catalyst for economic growth and development in Ethiopia, DBE must strengthen its capital base, diversify its funding sources, improve its risk management practices, expand its outreach, and collaborate with other development partners.
