Abstract

As early as the eighteenth century, as the Industrial Revolution was well underway in EnglandEngland, and modern economics was slowly taking shape, Adam SmithSmith, Adam and David RicardoRicardo, David clearly saw the direct role of mechanisation, technological progress, and technical efficiency in labour productivity. The link between technological progress and productivity (not just labour productivity) that Smith recognised inspired Ricardo, who had read The Wealth of Nations.
