Abstract

Summary This chapter in the book underscores the crucial importance of privacy in the evolution of monetary systems, particularly digital currencies. It seeks to demystify and precisely define privacy, a concept that varies across cultures and is central to freedom and democracy. The chapter discusses the shift from simple data leak prevention to a more comprehensive control over personal data, highlighting the OECD Privacy Guidelines and the principles of “Real Privacy” (absolute, unbreakable anonymity) and “Trust-based Privacy” (reliance on third parties for data protection). It also differentiates between pseudonymity and true anonymity, stressing that real privacy requires unlinkability to protect against data deanonymization. The chapter concludes that effective privacy in digital currency systems must be cryptographically enforced and not just based on trust.
