Abstract

Claudia Goldin is the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University, where she was the first woman tenured in the economics department. She is also co-director of the NBER’s Gender in the Economy Study Group, former president of the American Economic Association (2013), former director of the NBER’s Development of the American Economy programme (1989 to 2017) and has been the recipient of a myriad of prizes reflecting her contributions to economics, including the 2023 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Claudia is renowned for her pioneering scholarship on the evolution of the role of women in the US economy, including analysing female labour force participation, the gender wage gap and the economics of career and family. She is also an authority on the history of education in America, and has made important contributions to understanding the link between changes in educational attainment and income inequality.
