Abstract

Zusammenfassung In diesem Kapitel wird argumentiert, dass der europäische Republikanismus besser geeignet ist, die europäische Integration zu erklären, weil er impliziert, dass die Hauptantriebskraft der europäischen Integration nicht nur der wirtschaftliche Vorteil ist, sondern vielmehr die Furcht vor (wirtschaftlicher) Dominierung. Formen von Dominierung können nur durch die Herrschaft von (europäischen) Gesetzen vermieden werden. Der Republikanismus befasst sich jedoch auch mit wirtschaftlichen Problemen, da die „res publica“ der öffentlichen Güter und der Wohlfahrt im Mittelpunkt der Theorie steht. Der Republikanismus erlaubt es also, politische Aspekte mit wirtschaftlicher Rationalität zu verbinden.
