Abstract

This chapter examines the factors that affect individuals’ emigration intentions. We measure individual-level values, using the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) in a sample of 1250 non-migrant Lithuanians. The results revealed that individual-level values are important determinants of migration intentions. Both the sub-dimensions of individual-level values and higher-order value dimensions were significantly associated with intention to emigrate. The higher-order value dimensions were all significant predictors of intention to emigrate with the exception of self-transcendence. Values were stronger predictors than demographic variables. However, we did not measure additional factors, such as push-pull factors in the international business environment, and personal circumstances of individuals. While we found individual values to be important predictors, they are only a set of factors in the migration decision.
