Migrant Inclusion and Wider Workforce Well-being: Understanding the MNE Challenges and Solutions through the Diversity Climates Lens

Abstract

Migration is a global phenomenon affecting more and more countries. It features prominently on government agendas within developed economies. Workforce well-being has risen up political agendas within such economies separately from but alongside that of migration. Migration workforce integration and wider workforce well-being are now both business priorities. In this chapter, we introduce international business scholars to the diversity and inclusion literature to enhance the research richness of the former. First, we provide an overview of the growing diversity of organizations. Second, we define and differentiate the concepts of diversity climate and climate for inclusion. We present current research findings on the relationship between both diversity climate and climate for inclusion and well-being of minorities. Third, we analyze the interplay between such climates and well-being. Fourth, we discuss multinational enterprise (MNE) challenges and potential solutions to support migrant inclusion and wider workforce well-being: (1) the diversification of the workforce and breadth of MNE operations; (2) the politicization of migration and the organizational field; and (3) migrant superdiversity and intersectionality. We conclude with the need for global, national, and local customized initiatives drawing on a wide range of stakeholders. Only in this way can both migrant inclusion and wider workforce well-being be achieved.
