Abstract

It goes without saying that people have lives outside of work, so it is essential for them to look after their families, enjoy time off and grow personally. Over the last two decades, there has been an increasing debate among academics and professionals regarding the experiences of managing work and personal life—two important domains in the life of a human. Therefore, in this chapter, we consolidate these debates to provide some background on the concept of work-life balance. By highlighting the origins of the concept, the chapter opens with the historical background of work-life balance. Thereafter, we explore the nature of work-life balance, which covers a broad range of issues associated with managing work and nonwork domains. Furthermore, we focus on the main determinants of work-life balance by exploring the organisational and individual factors affecting the ability to juggle work and nonwork commitments. Finally, we provide an overview of work-life balancing experiences in Africa in keeping with the book’s goal of understanding these experiences from an African perspective.
