Abstract

Religious humanism brings together major approaches to social problems that fall into the “religious” category: a collective focal point, a moral sense based on a covenant with ancestors, and an ongoing redemptive struggle with evil; “humanism” embodies the idea that humanity is the basic standard of value, enthroning the rational life; redemption depends on human effort alone. The key message is that religious humanism is a framework built from many strands of wisdom that can house many ideological and religious perspectives. Ultimately, religious humanism comes alive when these perspectives nurture each other. The question is how can this be accomplished?
