Abstract

This chapter chronicles the ever-uncertain plight of Ssangyong Motor between 1997 and 2019. It begins by providing some background on the automaker through 1996, including its technology tie-up with Daimler-Benz of Germany. In then provides a shortened outline of the Korean automaker’s failure, its eventual takeover by DMC, and its tumultuous time under its rival, between 1997 and 2001. Next, the chapter examines the Pyeongtaek-based firm’s independent meanderings after being left out of GM’s absorption of DMC. This surprisingly profitable period subsequently led to its acquisition by Shanghai Automotive Industry Company (SAIC) of China in 2004. Thereafter, a section reviews the two automakers’ failed marriage through 2009. This is followed by a discussion of Ssangyong Motor’s promising but ultimately unsuccessful relationship with M&M of India, between 2010 and 2019. The chapter then concludes by briefly summarizing the tiny automaker’s status and prospects for the future.
