Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate domain of transport networks from the vantage point of network science. Drawing inspiration from Euler’s seminal work that transformed urban complexities into more straightforward models using graphs, the chapter underscores the evolution and pivotal role of network science in understanding and evaluating transport infrastructures. Central to the narrative is the significance of connectivity, emphasizing the advantages of core nodes over their peripheral counterparts. The chapter illuminates the detailed data preparation necessary for the analysis of transport networks. It further probes into the nuances of multilayered networks and those sensitive to time, highlighting the repercussions of delays and temporal variations in network dynamics. Throughout, the work integrates historical perspectives, contemporary analyses, and numerous references, offering a holistic perspective on transport networks and their multifarious implications.
