Abstract

This chapter will focus on the work system before and during the early industrial revolution. The three systems discussed include the domestic, the putting-out, and the factory work systems (Britannica 2020a, Domestic System. Encyclopedia Britannica. https://www.britannica.com/topic/domestic-system ). In the domestic system, work was done by the family, who provided the equipment, and the raw materials, carried out the processing, and owned the final products. The putting-out was where the family did work, but merchants supplied the raw material and owned the final products. In this system, the family provided their service at an agreed price. The factory system was when work was done in a central location outside the family, owned by the merchants. The chapter discussed leadership theory unique to each system (Horne 2011, The Philosophical Foundations of Leadership. https://www.leadership-central.com/philosophical-foundations-of-leadership.html . Accessed 7 January 2022). The chapter traced the origin of the alienation of the worker from his work and the output of his work. It stated that when workers lost control of how work was done and the pace of work, there were industrial challenges in the factory system (Trueman 2015, The Domestic System. History Learning Site. http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/domestic_system.htm . Accessed 8 August 2022).
