Abstract

This chapter provides a general overview on the role and functioning of the financial system, with a specific focus on the EU context. In particular, the chapter presents a discussion of the principal financial markets, namely money, bonds, equity and derivatives markets, highlighting their different characteristics in terms of market participants and their purposes, as well as in terms of features of the financial instruments negotiated. Moreover, it explores the fundamentals behind financial intermediation and provides a general overview on the business and main characteristics of the principal categories of financial intermediaries.
