Abstract

The dominance of neoliberal and free market economics in higher education is an often discussed subject among academics concerned with the future of the discipline. However, what is often lacking is a proper understanding of the true nature of this dominance. This paper first establishes that there is a free market bias in undergraduate economics education in Scottish Universities. Subsequently, rather than focusing on why, this paper focuses on how this has come to be—and the implications of this on both the discipline and society. An application of Gramsci’s ‘Cultural Hegemony’, as well as analysis’ of Cox’s ‘Deification of the Market’ and Fisher’s ‘Capitalist Realism’, will be used to this end.
