Abstract

Part VIII explores Cuba’s priority sectors of health, medical tourism, and the biopharmaceutical industries. These are sectors of prime interest for international investors. The six interviews in this chapter offer insights into the industry through conversations with doctors, executives, and an executive editor for a medical journal on the Island. These interviews illuminate the achievements of the healthcare system, the numerous opportunities for research, collaboration, investment, innovative pharmaceuticals, coronavirus protocols, COVID vaccine development, joint ventures, and the medical tourism industry. In this chapter, “Cuba’s Medical Tourism Business - Its Past, Present, and Future,” I interviewed Dr. Osvaldo Héctor Ardisana. Dr. Héctor is an integral medicine specialist employed by the Comercializadora Servicios Medicos Cubanos S.A. (CSMC, S.A.) organization. He is the regional director for English–French-speaking markets of the North American and Caribbean regions at CSMC. This interview explores the history and present activities of the organization and the medical tourism industry in Cuba. CSMC, S.A. was founded in 1987. It is an umbrella organization that oversees Cuba’s health and wellness tourism, the Henry Reeve Medical Brigade, and manages the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) programs for foreign students.
