Abstract

I became a libertarian around 1960 but did so through disagreeable experiences more than through contact with inspirational teachers. The most intensely disagreeable experience occurred during a six-month stint in the Army in 1959. Life as a private convinced me that I wanted to get as far away from the regimentation of Army life as I could. Support for my desire came from reading a magazine article titled something like “The Joys of College Teaching” written by the President of the University of Minnesota. The author convinced me that college teaching would allow me to feed my bookwormish cast of mind, so I enrolled in graduate school in 1963, received my Ph.D. in 1966, and have lived the life of a bookworm ever since.
