Abstract

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831) was one of the most influential German philosophers of the early nineteenth century. Hegel’s principal achievement, seen in retrospect, was the development of a distinctive re-articulation of idealism, sometimes termed absolute idealism. For Hegel the classical mind–body or matter-spirit dualism of Descartes, or sykof the Catholic Church, for instance, was a contradiction that could be overcome by logic (dialectics). In contrast to Immanuel Kant, who believe that the subject imposes rational a priori pure concepts of understanding upon the sense-data of intuitions, Hegel believed that the pure concepts are grounded in reality itself. Discussions like that were popular in German universities at the time.
