Abstract

One of the industries severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa is the tourism accommodation sector. However, the exact magnitude of the impacts on the industry is still being debated. Against this backdrop, this chapter utilises secondary data from Statistics South Africa to explore and describe tourism accommodation occupancy trends in the South African accommodation sector under the pandemic strain. The study found that tourism accommodation facilities experienced different levels of impact from the pandemic. Other facilities showed more resilience than others, especially in 2021, as the virus got milder due to the discovery of vaccines and various recovery strategies adopted by accommodation businesses. This chapter recommends a fusion of multiple resilience and recovery strategies that are acceptable and potentially effective in the ‘new normal dispensation’.
