Abstract

Corruption control is imperative for productivity growth as illustrated in Chapter 2 . This chapter analyses corruption in Jamaica and how it has impeded Jamaica’s development. The chapter outlines various examples of corrupt practices on the island and some of the root causes of the corrupt behaviours which in some cases are used to “grease the wheels” for certain processes to get accomplished in a timely manner. The consequences of corruption are also analysed and the efforts are made by the Jamaican authority to curb these practices. This Chapter also highlights Jamaica’s informal economy which when dissected by employment by industry shows that the informal economy is almost as large as the formal economy which is a cause for concern through the lens of long term and sustainable development.
