Productivity and Labour Usuage in the Service Providing Sector in Jamaica

Abstract

This chapter gives an industry productivity analysis for the Service Proving industries in Jamaica, similar to the Goods Producing Industry in Chapter 3 . These industries include Hotel and Restaurants, Wholesale and Retail Trade, Electricity, Gas and Water, Financial and Insurance Activities, Real Estate among others. The chapter identifies the level of labour that produces the maximum output as optimal and renders labour hired above this level as excess labour that could be employed elsewhere. The excess productivity and excess output that could be gained from each industry are estimated. The results suggest that all the service providing industries in Jamaica are currently employing more labour than optimal at this level of capacity and as a result, the productivity level per person is lower than it ought to be. Similar to Chapter 3 , recommendations are made as to how to improve the level of productivity in these industries.
