Entrepreneurial Orientation of Refugee and Immigrant Students in Higher Education in Türkiye: The Example of Necmettin Erbakan University

Abstract

According to the 2020 “Global Trends” report published by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Türkiye is the country where the highest number of refugees are accepted in the world. At the same time, according to this report, Türkiye has been the country that has hosted the largest refugee population for the last seven years without interruption. In this context, many refugee students receive higher education in Türkiye. The education, career choice, and entrepreneurial tendency and orientation of these refugee students are the subject of this study. The aim of the study is to examine the entrepreneurial tendencies of foreign university students in Türkiye by comparing them according to some variables such as their foreign status. Active students of immigrant and refugee origin studying in Konya, in Türkiye, constitute the sample of this study. In this context, the study was designed with a descriptive method and was conducted on 202 refugee and immigrant students. According to the research findings, it was seen that the entrepreneurial tendencies of immigrant and refugee students were high and their entrepreneurial intentions were moderate. The entrepreneurial tendencies and intentions of the participating students differ according to gender, education level, and success. Finally, entrepreneurial tendencies of refugee and immigrant students significantly affect their entrepreneurial intentions.
