Abstract

To give up a well-paid job at the biggest shipping company, an apartment in the beautiful Saint-Petersburg, a boyfriend, and move to another country to become a qualitative researcher was a kind of spontaneous decision. I had sent off hundreds of ships from north to south and from west to east, I could easily set off my own journey, I thought. Several months later, in August 2009, I stepped on the lower deck of the Hurtigruten, the big Norwegian coast-ferry, as a part of the Qualitative Camp course program, mandatory for PhD candidates at that time. To my disappointment, the course did not provide me with a ready-to-use kit on how to quickly finish the PhD research proposal I had been struggling with for some time. Totally the opposite. The journey started with the what’s-going-on-here game that turned out to be my main question for the rest of the course. And the question kept lingering for years after. My Qualitative Camp was not that much about acquiring knowledge on qualities of the research as about acquiring my own qualities as a researcher who is ready and able to adapt to cultures and circumstances when collecting original data.
