Abstract

This chapter addresses the relentless economic competition among nations, emphasizing the significance of strategic development objectives, quality of growth, and the need for economic reform. It underscores the importance of institutions, leadership, and avoiding “bad ideas” for sustained development. By noting the economic challenges and policy missteps within the context of Egypt's economic history, it discusses the need for a pragmatic approach to economic management focused on avoiding harmful practices and fostering inclusive growth. The chapter draws upon various economic approaches and empirical studies to argue that long-term success in development hinges on strategic integration with the global economy, resource mobility, high savings and investment rates, macroeconomic stability, and effective governance. It also suggests that learning from past experience and adopting disciplined and flexible growth policies are crucial to navigating economic shocks and achieving sustainable development.
