Abstract

The new digitalized manufacturing paradigm of the fourth industrial revolution, commonly known as industry 4.0 (I4.0), has appeared as a disruptive stage, different from the past due to its speed, extension, and impact on society. An industrialization model based on advanced technologies has expanded in industrialized nations that have designed public policies and new forms of governance and have systematized the experiences of application to consolidate development. In developing countries, however, the application of public policies is fragmented and weak. The aim of this paper is to show why and how digitalization processes have evolved in Mexico and to define the internal and external difficulties that companies in digital transition face. An exploratory study (interview and survey) identified the opportunities the I.40 model offers for Mexico's export industry, as well as the model's unresolved failures.
