Abstract

This chapter begins by asking the following question: What is finance? This is a question that every student, every future professional and every citizen should ask themselves. For most people, finance appears to be a monolithic, distant, de-humanized and even virtual object. Whether praised or demonized, finance seems like a myth, a world of figures, experts and powers, inaccessible to ordinary people. For the more pragmatic, finance is associated with the hope of profitable wealth, gainful employment and social advancement.
