Abstract

The term social enterprisesocial enterprise is relatively modern, in Europe it first appeared in the 1990s (Nyssens in Social enterprise. Routledge, 2006) and is used to describe an organisationorganisation which is profit generating but has a social purposesocial purpose as its primary aim. As will be seen in this book, the types of organisation which can be classed as social enterprises are varied and diverse, yet they all have the overriding objective of promoting a social good. Social enterprise is considered part of the social economy because it involves trading; Pearce (Social enterprise in Anytown. Calouste Gulbenkian, 2003) defines the social economysocial economy where organisations use trading to advance their social objectives.
