Abstract

The influx of Venezuelan refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in Trinidad and Tobago in the last five years has raised several concerns about their integration in the society. Trinidad and Tobago is a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) which is considered to have medium–low vulnerability and low economic resilience making it limited in its capacity to deal with large inflows of migrants and refugees. In addition, its economy has been experiencing virtually no growth since 2009 as oil and gas production, as well as prices, have plummeted, severely reducing the fiscal space of the State to adequately host refugees and migrants.
