Abstract

The pandemic triggered a dramatic change in the management of the European economy, with new instruments to foster both monetary and fiscal stimuli. The outbreak of the war in Ukraine further prompted a rethinking of the scope, nature, instruments, and institutional architecture of the European economic governance. The simple return to pre-pandemic rules and instruments appears less and less realistic. This chapter reconstructs the main innovations introduced since the pandemic; it further highlights some of the key elements of the related and most recent debate on the reform of the European economic architecture; and suggests possible evolutions in the coming future.
