Abstract

Employee engagement is a big deal. It is a big deal for employees, for organizations, and for the society at large. The chapter explains why employee engagement is such a big deal by discussing the basic notion of employee engagement. What does employee engagement really mean? We provide an overview of the relevant definitions that have been suggested to explain the construct of employee engagement and the approaches used to explain employee engagement. To highlight how employee engagement is a multidimensional concept, we discuss how it is related to other organizational behaviour concepts. Later in the chapter, we explain the benefits of employee engagement for the organization and the employees to highlight why it has become an imperative for organizations.
