Abstract

The glove is among the invisible products of winter fashion in our society. Over the last few centuries, the glove has been an object of daily use, worn in winter as well as in summer, and it was essential in the clothing of both men and women until the Second World War. Today, this heritage contributes to the revival of fashion when certain actors in the luxury industry seek to reinvest this heritage to conceive attractive products. This work aims to trace the evolution of glove-wearing and the effects of fashion on this product over time through a corpus of written, visual and material sources produced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The cross-referencing of these sources facilitates a closer look at how this item was perceived by its contemporaries. The environmental impact of this fashion will also be addressed, as well as the actions taken today by actors in the leather industry to become part of dynamics of sustainable development. Finally, this article approaches the glove as a cultural and material heritage of fashion.
