Abstract

The audience at the presentation of the John Fritz Gold Medal on March 23, 1925, in New York constituted some of the greatest minds of the day. Thomas Edison, a previous winner of the award, was there. So was J. Waldo Smith, the engineer who designed New York City’s water supply. The inventor of the wireless telegraph, Guglielmo Marconi, was seated in the second row. Orville Wright, who had lost brother 12 years earlier and yet continued to persevere as an innovator, traveled from Ohio to join the crowd. As did Sir Robert Hadfield, the inventor of manganese steel, who sailed from London.
