“Fictitious Capital”: Money, the Symbol, and the State

Abstract

In this chapter, we will review Marx’s concept of money and capital, as an illustration of the ways in which the meaning of a term includes the appropriate roles, norms, and actions. Actors can use money as a way to generate more money, following specific rules according to the logic of “capital.” The meaning of these terms “money” and “capital” only exists by the regularity of these specific actions, which then are represented in the symbol of money. When money itself is reified, it stands for the actions of those participating in the capitalist system, with implications we will explore in a case study.
