Abstract

In developing servant leaders in business, we always begin with the psychology of the servant leader, to stress the importance of the uniqueness of the individual. Healthy self-esteem and psychological safety are the psychological basis of leadership. Understanding the dance between leading and following has a profound impact on how we frame the different role archetypes that we play in business life (manager/specialist/entrepreneur/leader). The key role of a leader is to lift their followers into their better selves. With this in mind, we focus on developing the leader as coach through enabling deeper and more meaningful relationships. This deeper connection involves a greater expression of emotions and more awareness of our values. Ultimately the servant leader provides a forum and co-creates an atmosphere in which the purpose and happiness of all team members becomes a key part of the culture of their team or organization. Our work can be summarized through the use of four key underpinning principles: self-realization, holistic connection, collective leadership, and meaningful purpose.
