Abstract

Asked to identify someone who performs the same job as Winston Smith, the protagonist of George Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984, in contemporary American society, many people would point their finger at the Chair of the Federal Reserve Bank. While Ronald Reagan was able to set the stage for the reintroduction of free market capitalism through the use of his popular slogan, “Reaganomics,” he needed an architect to implement his ambitious economic agenda and assure its continued vitality even years after he left office. Enter Reagan’s pick for Fed chair, Alan Greenspan, progenitor of the Newspeak economy that continues to inform debates over fiscal and monetary policy.
