Abstract

This chapter examines how the decentralised energy paradigm fits within the context of the broader energy system transition. The shift towards more distributed forms of electricity provision is taking place in the context of broader energy system trends including the electrification of mobility and transport, smart and efficient energy management of buildings and the decarbonisation of heating and cooling. We frame decentralisation in the context of broader energy system integration by examining multi-energy systems and analysing the interactions across five system perspectives—fuel, spatial, temporal, service, and network. On this basis the energy system at the distribution is likely to be become increasingly interconnected and a proactive approach to coordination is likely to best position the system to manage risks and exploit opportunities.
