Electricity: Power to the People

Abstract

Joe Studwell in How Asia Works used the Philippines to “prove” that education wasn’t enough to escape poverty, and while true, it was lack of electricity that held this country back. Once that was resolved, it could boom. Since the industrial revolution in England to Morocco today, industrialisation and rapid economic growth has always required a stable energy supply to a factory. This chapter explains why the clothes we wear today are often made in Bangladesh and not (yet) Tanzania. We also look at the scope for Africa’s industrial revolution to be the greenest ever.
