Abstract

This is the last substantive chapter dealing with a particular group of national responses. Soviet developmental neomercantilism was unique in many ways but carried a generic affinity with the agro-industrial neomercantilism of Nazi Germany and especially Fascist Italy as well as with the other developmentalist responses. It is thus an indispensable part of our comparative set. The Turkish response, which was exemplary of developmentalism among small countries, constitutes another primary case. With their weaker dirigiste thrust, the rest of the Balkan countries were to Turkey what Austria was to Germany. They are thus included in this analysis as secondary cases for comparison with Turkey.
