Abstract

This introductory chapter outlines the scope of the book. It defines terrorism and builds the argument that terrorists and terror organizations are rational entities just as much as the countries which are trying to deal with the issue. Domestic and transnational (international) terrorism Terrorism international are differentiated. It provides a preview of the incidence and the severity of global terrorism, introduces major terror organizations and the tactics used, describes different strands of Islam and Sharia lawSharia law , briefly touches upon the participation of women in terrorism, and how internet is used for terror acts. Importantly, it classifies various counter-terror measures, clarifies what we mean by the “root causes of terrorism,” and introduces the forthcoming chapters. It also makes clear what is not covered in the book.
