Abstract

The first few years of the new Millennium were characterized by a flurry of international agreements aimed at strengthening the commitment of the international community to help developing countries reduce poverty as well as agreements to shape the rules of international trade in ways that would be more supportive of development, and to increase the level as well as the effectiveness of economic assistance. These included the UN Millennium Declaration, which contained what later became the Millennium Development Goals, the 2001 WTO agreement to launch the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations, the International Conference of Financing for Development in 2002, the Paris Agreements on Aid Effectiveness 2005, and several others in between. During this period developing countries made tremendous progress but in 2008 were buffeted by a major financial crisis in the developed world. This chapter analyzes the implications of the agreements and the impact of the continuing globalization on sustainable development.
