Abstract

The work of the present author on bullionist episodes is compared to that of subsequent scholars. The data series underling dollar-sterling exchange-market history—par value, exchange rate, and gold points—are discussed and relevant summary statistics listed for subperiods of the full time span. Background analysis of exchange-market integration, market efficiency, and regime efficiency is presented. Criticisms of the author’s dollar-sterling work are acknowledged. Regarding the U.S. specie standard, later literature concentrates on the issue of whether the Second Bank of the United States was a central bank. Some scholars agree with the present-author’s affirmative conclusion; but one researcher argues strongly that Second Bank money should not be considered high-powered. Her critique is not neglected here.
